What is SEO and Why is it Important?

Updated: Mar 24, 2020

SEO stands for search engine optimization, which is just a fancy phrase for the way that websites appear in Search engines, such as Google & Bing, when people on the internet search for things.

Let's break this down a little further.

Let's say you've just moved to a new place, and you need to find someone to cut and/or style your hair. You will open up your search engine of choice and search for something similar to "barber or hairstylist near me". You may even use a location to increase the accuracy of your search. "Barber" and "Hairstylist" in this case are known as keywords.

If your website lacks these keywords and has not been yet optimized for search engines, your websites will not be one of the sites that pull up in this search. This will cause your business to lose out on the opportunity for new customers that are looking for products/services that you offer. Optimizing your site will help deliver better information to search engines so that your content can be properly indexed and displayed within search results.

While paid advertising, social media, and other online platforms can generate traffic to websites, the majority of online traffic is driven by search engines.

Organic search results cover more digital real estate, appear more credible to savvy searchers, and receive way more clicks than paid advertisements.

SEO can get very complicated so it's probably best to leave it to the experts. However, there are some things that even a person that has never heard of SEO before can do to better their website. This includes researching the your industry's top keywords and ensuring that these words are all over your site. Another best practice is to rename your website pages so that when your website does appear in the top searches, potential customers are quickly able to identify what your business does.
